Forest of La Honfría
(Linares de Riofrío) |

The
Sierra de las Quilamas
rises above the southern plains of the province
as if it were a rocky rampart, in what some call
the Presierras
(or pre-mountains), as a true antechamber of the
Sierra de
Francia
and Béjar.
This mountainous alignment facing west to east,
in spite of its low altitude, contains corners and
pockets of great beauty and of remarkable environmental
quality, enriched by the climatic singularities
caused by the river.
Various kinds of oak trees share the environment
with magnificent holly trees, chestnut groves and
other clearly Mediterranean species. The thick undergrowth
contains a variety of wildlife that takes advantage
of the isolation of many of these valleys for its
comfortable survival, under the permanent watch
of the big predators that inhabit these places. |
